Self test: alcohol, parents*

Here are ten questions for parents to think about. How many would you answer YES…?

  1. Do you forbid your son or daughter to drink?
  2. Have you told your teenager that drinking is evil, immoral, or wrong?
  3. Have you ever told your teenager that being able to hold a lot of liquor is a sign of being grown up?
  4. Do you do more drinking than you would want your teenager to do?
  5. Has your teenager ever seen you drunk?
  6. Has he or she ever seen you drink because you were feeling unhappy or nervous?
  7. Do you try to hide how much you drink from your children?
  8. Have you ever said something to your children when you’d been drinking that you were sorry for later?
  9. Has your teenager ever seen you with a hangover?
  10. Has he or she ever seen you pass out from drinking?

If you answered any of these question YES, your children may have a harder time learning to use alcohol responsibly. If you sense that drinking habits may be a problem in your family, now is the time to get help.
